AUGMENTATIVE AND ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION NEEDS

Pediatric speech therapy is often just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to helping a child with limited verbal language skills. Depending on your child’s needs, they may benefit from an augmentative & alternative communication device (AAC), which includes high-tech and low-tech options. This form of treatment involves using pictures and/or words to develop simple and more complex connections and augment the child’s ability to effectively communicate wants and needs to others. For example, a child who is nonverbal might learn to point to a glass of water when they are thirsty.

What to expect with Augmentative & Alternative Communication Device Therapy

Your therapist will work with you to develop strategies to help your child communicate more effectively. Guided strategies that you can use at home and at your child’s school will also be provided. Strategies will be adjusted over time as your child learns new skills and is able to function more independently.

Pediatric speech therapy can help your child develop to their fullest potential. Sessions with a speech therapist at our office are friendly and encouraging. If you’d like to request a free screening at Therapy Care or begin therapy for your child, call our office today to get the process started.

Is Your Child Struggling with Verbal Skills? If so, We Can Help

Working with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is very similar to working with a physical therapist, at least as far as the routine goes. The person receiving the therapy will have regular appointments with their SLP and will be given individualized strategies to work on at home to make additional progress.

For children with limited verbal language skills, the parents will be an integral part of the process. Our clinic provides speech therapy for children in addition to physical therapy, so be sure to give us a call if you require these services. Here’s a closer look at how speech therapy can help a child with a speech sound disorder.

How will a speech therapist determine the issue?

Your speech therapist will complete a comprehensive speech and language evaluation to determine whether they would benefit from using an AAC device.  Therapists frequently collaborate with companies that specialize in the manufacturing and the application of AAC to determine the best solution for your son or daughter.

How can I get started?

If your child is struggling with limited verbal expression skills or a neurological or physical disorder that is impacting their speech, give us a call to set up a screening appointment.

The good news when it comes to a communication disorder is that the earlier your child begins speech therapy, the better the long-term results can be.
